A. Digital pattern projection engine designs: 1. Off-axis engines for SPI (Solder Paste Inspection) application: (a). Develop low cost off-axis projection engines for SPI application. To develop smart algorithms which can identify depth ambiguity and realize fast speed measurement: 1. Coded phase shift pattern algorithm for 3D AOI application. 2. One-shot multi-steps phase shift pattern algorithms for small object re-construction application. 3. Adapted hybrid pattern algorithm for fast 3D AOI application. C. Develop 3D machine vision system prototypes: 1. On-axis 3D Machine Vision system for small object re-construction application. 2. 3D machine vision system has been widely used in modern industrial and non-industrial areas. For example, a structured light projection system can significantly improve the accuracy and speed of measurement. The aim of this full project is to develop a fast and highly accurate 3D machine vision system suitable for measuring small/moving objects and re-constructing 3D surfaces. To achieve this goal, the project team will study the feasibility of the following IP protected platform technologies,including(1)Adaptive compact off-axis projection, (2).Shadow-free multiple projection system configuration,(3)Equal coordinates image capture device, (4) One-shot multi-steps phase shift pattern algorithm, (5) Coded phase shift algorithm. The targeted products in the project will include (1) Compact 3D scanning system for small object (e.g.dental, mold tooling) and (2) 3D MV system for automatic optical inspection (AOI) / solder paste inspection (SPI). The above products will focus on the markets and applications of high speed in-line inspection,such as SMT (Surface Mounted Technologies) processing, semiconductor, food & pharmaceutical manufacturing. Furthermore, this can be applied in measuring or reconstructing 3D structures of moving objects and human face/body. The global size of the 3D vision market is USD 3.9 billion in 2010 and is estimated to reach USD 5.8 billion in 2015. The technology in this project will help machine vision companies in Hong Kong and mainland China to pursue this market.
