The deliverables for this project are summarised in the following (all IP will be designed in 0.5um/0.35um/0.25um high voltage CMOS process): 1. Complete design, tape-out (2 MPWs) and evaluation of the PSR AC-DC conversion IP platform. This platform will consist of the following building block IPs: * On-Chip 65KHz CMOS Oscillator with reduced EMI; * Short Circuit Protection and Auto-Recovery; * On-chip temperature sensing and thermal shut down; * 6 bit Analog to Digital Converter; * PID controller IP with phase margin > 45 degrees; * Specialized sampling circuit for power management applications; * Multiplier for input current shaping; * Zero current detectors to monitor the transformer current; * UVLO (Under Voltage Lockout); * Gate Driver . 2. One Engineering prototype of PSR AC-DC IC for LED lighting application for silicon verification of the full platform;; 3. Two AC-DC controller ICs in 2 MPWs - AC-DC controller IC for home appliance and PSR AC-DC controller IC for general power supply; 4. T8, T10 (general), T10 (double side LED tubes), E27, PAR30, Street lamp, Flood light, Mining Lamp, prototype LED lamps with the developed controller/driver ICs.
The application of LED (Light Emitting Diode) for general illumination will grow significantly due to its superior energy saving potential. US Department of Energy (DOE) estimated that in 2030 the annual energy saving from replacing conventional lighting with solid state ones will be approximately 190 terawatt-hours, or the equivalent annual electrical output of about 24 large power plants (1000MW electric) , a US$15 billions per year in energy savings. And this saving would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.4 million metric tons of carbon. This reduction of electricity will be sufficient to light up more than 95 millions additional homes in US today. However, advances in LED technology alone are not sufficient to help us to realize such benefit. A comprehensive integrated circuit driver platform must also be developed to fuel such wide-spread deployment. It is therefore the objective of this project to develop all of the essential analog and digital IPs for realizing families of highly efficient, robust and low cost integrated AC-lined driver ICs for HB (high brightness) LED lighting applications. The core technologies will primarily in low power AC-DC conversion. A novel analog and mixed signal control methodology will be developed for the low power, high accuracy, space-constraint, low cost, high volume LED driver applications. In this project we shall leverage our power management, high voltage analog design-integration, novel digital control and high voltage mixed signal ESD protection expertise which we have acquired in our various completed projects during the past few years. With this IP platform the IC design houses in Hong Kong and China will be able to build high performance LED drivers for general purpose LED solid state lighting, thus making solid state lighting a reality and enabling a greener environment, greener Hong Kong and China.
